Orchid (phragmipedium: Don Wimber)

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Joel Wilcox
Title: Orchid (phragmipedium: Don Wimber)
Gear used: Olympus C-8080WZ
Diaphragm: f6.3
Shutter speed: Approx. 1/2 sec. at ISO 50 (in auto mode)
Film used: SHQ jpeg
Technical information: I used the camera's macro mode, spot metering, and spot focus. Exposure was based on single spot reading from the right "wing" of the main flower and focus was set on a plane running through the body of the opening flower. Lighting was accomplished using room lights (tungsten) after setting a custom white balance for the exposure. The backdrop is a black felt cloth.
Subject information: This is probably my wife's favorite orchid and is considered one of the children.

Comment left by: Richard Lovison (rlovison@simons-rock.edu) This is a beautiful image of an Orchid. The black backdrop was a great choice adding drama to a wonderful composition with superb lighting. Very well done.

This shot illustrates to me perhaps the two aspects of digital photography that make me, as a film shooter, envious; the greater DOF that the digital process yields in macro use, and the resolution. This shot, even at 300% on my monitor, is still impressively sharp with only tiny jaggies. The DOF is simply great, and difficult to match with 35mm macro lenses, in my opinion.

Very effective composition.

And it is a very nice flower; it would be a favourite of mine as well, if I had it..
