Sunset silhouettes

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Olaf Greve
Title: Sunset silhouettes
Gear used: Olympus Camedia C2020Z, lens set to the 135mm equivalent in 35mm format
Aperture used: f4
Shutter speed used: around 1/125th (underexposed by 1 full stop)
Media used: Smart Media
Technical information: This is the type of shots in which I most miss the OM-4Ti's advanced spot measuring features. In this shot, I set the Camedia to spot mode, performed the basic trick of setting the exposure to the reading of the sky next to the sun, and bracketed around that point. Using an underexposure of 1 stop yielded the results I thought to be most pleasing.
Subject information: During ALL of the shooting season I was on the look-out for a beautiful sunset, but very few took place that were interesting enough. So the end of the shooting season approached and still nothing. Just then, we went to some town and while driving I noticed the conditions were moderately O.K. for a sunset shot (i.e. the right amount of clouds, etc.). I pulled over and found myself in the middle of an industrial park (D'oh!). So, with about the ugliest buildings to fill the foreground I had to make-do. That then left me with the obvious choice of going for a silhouette shot. Fortunately at least the trees came somewhat to my saving, and by underexposing the shot (and hence rendering the foreground objects completely black), the shot is still kinda O.K. Unfortunately, I had MUCH bigger plans for this shot though...:(

Comment left by: Chris Barker (ftog@threeshoes.co.uk) Nice framing, but the flare lets it down a little, for me, in reducing the contrast locally.

Comment left by: Piers Hemy (no e-mail specified) Again, shame about the flare - but it would not have been a problem had you been able to lose the roofs.

Comment left by: Brian Swale (**) Very dramatic and painterly. Well composed; I like this picture. Any flare and the buildings are not an issue for me.

Comment left by: Andrew Wendelborn (no e-mail specified) The silhouettes (buildings and foreground) work well. And the exposure brings out the clouds. Very good. Flare can be annoying, but here I think it, in some ways, enhances the dramatic effect.
