Impression of sunrise, Romney marshes.

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Piers Hemy
Title: Impression of sunrise, Romney marshes.
Gear used: OM-3 + 24mm Zuiko.
Film used: Fujicolor Superia 400 ASA.
Technical information: Scanned and cropped with curves adjustment to emphasize the cloud.
Subject information: A view from the tower of St Mary's church in Rye towards Dungeness nuclear power station. In reality, it is late afternoon, looking east, hence (as in the title) this is only an "impression", but I am "impressed" that the cloud detail is visible on this, a mere silver halide image. In fairness, I have to give the scanner some credit too.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) Wow!
Is this for real, or was the sky somehow manipulated (either by a filter or digitally)?
If it's real, it's got to be one of the most amazing sunrise shots ever; very cool!

Comment left by: The Photographer (no e-mail specified) It is a single exposure, no filters used, and the original Fuji Frontier print has a virtually clear sky - but a 14 bit 4000 dpi scan of the negative contains all the cloud detail you can see on the final result. It was digitally enhanced by masking off the sky, and using curves to darken the red shadows, and lighten RGB shadows/midtones; then by masking off the ground, and using curves to darken the red midtones.

In effect digital filtration has been applied to the ground (to apply a green/blue filter to shadows and midtones), but not the sky.

Comment left by: Andrew Wendelborn ( ) Yes, an interesting "impression". IMHO your "filtering" works well. Interesting things can be done with curves. I wonder how the sky effect could be achieved non-digitally ...

Comment left by: Chris Barker (no e-mail specified) Nice contrast in colour Piers. Well done.

Comment left by: Fernando Gonzalez Gentile (no e-mail specified) My old fashioned and scarce knowledge of PS makes me use it for slight correction of scanning defects so as to make the image as similar as the slide itself on my monitor.
But your work is challenging my convictons Piers.
It's about time.

Fernando
