A Chimp Toward Sundown

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Walt Wayman
Title: A Chimp Toward Sundown
Gear used: OM-4Ti + MD2 + 80-200/2.8 Tamron SP LD at about 110-120mm
Diaphragm: f/11-16 (I think)
Shutter speed: 1/30 (maybe slower)
Film used: Fuji Provia 400F
Technical information: Shot hand-held, braced against the tailgate of the SUV that got us there. The small aperture was needed for DOF. There was no time to take spot readings, but the auto exposure mode pretty much nailed it. The slide was scanned twice, once biased for shadows, once for highlights, at 5400 d.p.i. with a Minolta 5400. The resulting 7152x4784 pixel, 102MB TIFFs were combined in Picture Window Pro 3.5, accompanied by a little dodging, burning-in and masking trickery. Then I made the TOPE version.
Subject information: We had parked a few yards off the road in the dunes and I was unloading REAL camera gear, both OM and MF, to photograph the sunset, when I saw my wife about 50 feet away getting a head start with her new toy, a Stylus 500. I grabbed the body and lens I had been using earlier that day shooting shore birds and caught her silhouetted in mid-chimp.

An impressive sky, and good usage of the foreground.

Comment left by: Richard Lovison (no e-mail specified) Hmmm... SUV, REAL camera gear, backside of beautiful spouse, lots of attitude and technically well done. I wonder who took this shot? ;-) Nice image Walt!

Comment left by: Anonymous Visitor (Piers Hemy) I am amazed at the shadow detail, very impressive indeed. Subject ain't bad either ;-)

Comment left by: Andrew Wendelborn (no e-mail specified) Yes, most impressive. Lots of detail in shadows through highlights. How does the "combining" process work?

Comment left by: Brian Swale (no e-mail specified) Hmm. I must be doing something wrong. I never seem to see neat subjects like that anymore!

Amazing the way the beach sand is illuminated, contrasting with the dark sea water.

Well done. Maybe you'll go to heaven after all !!
