Sunset at Punta del Este

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Fernando Gonzalez Gentile
Title: Sunset at Punta del Este
Film: Fuji Provia 100F
Exposure: 1/60
Diaphragm: f16 hyperfocal
Gear used: OM-2n with Shoe 4, Zuiko 21mm f3.5, two T-32s, 5 m. TTL cord, Eyecup 1, tripod.
Technical info: Tripod mounted OM-2N at a 3 meter distance from the pine tree. One shoe-mounted T-32, another connected to the shoe mounted one using a 5m. TTL cord. Flashes were beamed considering the irregular growing shape of the pine, the first firing a little upwards and the second firing from a higher point at the right.
OM-2N set to manual mode at 1/60, f was determined measuring the scene hiding the sun behind the tree; measuring was done using an Eyecup 1. Then, careful leveling of the horizon using a 1-10 screen and waiting until sun set at the foreseen place.
Shutter release using 4 sec. delay self-timer.

Subject info: This pine tree grows on the sand some 50 meters away from the sea shore of the beach where I stay during my summer holidays. Its branches are twisted and broken by winds and storms. I've been passing alongside this tree for years, sometimes wondering how to picture it, to capture its unusual growing pattern. A couple of weeks ago I figured out that its most favorable side could be seen at sunset.
Acknowledgements: To Mike Lazzari, who once commented that the only way to obtain proper exposures on the sand in the beach, was using fill in flash.
To Chuck Norcutt, who found the so called 'fang T-32' and not only enabled but also taught me some details on flash exposure.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) Lovely composed, with the tree nicelu exaggerated by the 21mm's perspective.

Comment left by: Chris Barker (ftog@threeshoes.co.uk) Very clever and good use of the flash.

Comment left by: M Lazzari (no e-mail specified) Great shot Fernando (P del E gives you away :>) I like the composition.

Comment left by: Andrew Wendelborn (no e-mail specified) Very nicely done. Perfect timing (cloud included).
I like the effect of the flash (and I'll now try for myself).

Comment left by: Piers Hemy (no e-mail specified) Really impressive control of the flash/ambient balance here - though you acknowledge the teacher, you should take credit as an accomplished pupil.
