Blown

Submitter's name: James McBride
Title: Blown
Gear used: Olympus Stylus 410 in Program Mode.
Diaphragm: Unknown
Shutter speed: Unknown
Film used: Digital.
Technical information: I had just bought the Stylus and wanted to try it out and it was the smallest camera I had. It worked much better than I thought it would.
Subject information: The event was the Mile-High National drag races in Denver Colorado. The temperature was 102 F and a lot of engines were blowing from the high altitude and the temperature combined. These engines burn nitro-methane and put out between 7 and 8 thousand horsepower. They go 0-100 mph in one second and are going about 330 mph in less than five seconds. The quarter-mile run is a semi-controlled explosion. This one was an uncontrolled explosion that blew the top off the engine and the supercharger was hanging from one side like an opened lid. The sounds and ground and air vibrations from these cars cannot be described in words. It's unbelievable. The quality of this image isn't much but the timing wasn't bad.

Comment left by: Ken N (no e-mail specified) I think the image vibration tells the story of the vibration and chest thumping sound. Excellent timing.
