Liberators

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Olaf Greve
Title: Liberators
Gear used: Olympus Camedia C2020Z, lens set to the 135mm equivalent in 35mm format
Aperture used: Somewhere between f4 and f8
Shutter speed used: around 1/125th or so
Media used: Smart Media
Technical information: Nothing of interest; just positioning in as comfortable a position as possible, and taking the shot.
Digital edits: Just cropped off a bit from the top and the bottom to achieve a square format and put some more emphasis on the tank. I would have liked to get rid of the distracting security person with the bright yellow coat (lower left corner) as well as the blue piece of cloth (upper right corner), but I felt I couldn't do so without losing vital parts of the crowd. :)
Subject information: Well, for once I 'cheated' somewhat on the shooting interval time, as during most of the shooting season my right hand was broken, and I didn't get around to taking pictures prior to that happening. The shot is from May 5th 2005, which happened to be the 60th anniversary of the WW2 liberation of The Netherlands. This year there was a special commemorative parade of around 100 old WW2 vehicles that are maintained by an association called: "Keep 'em rolling".
On many vehicles American, British and especially Canadian veterans were present who participated in the actual liberation 60 years ago (no Russians as they didn't liberate The Netherlands). Such is the case for this good 'ole Sherman tank as well. I love the expressions on the faces of the liberators, as well as the reaction (and applause) they got from the audience.
The historical importance of the commemoration, as well as the IMO nice shot, made me decide to use this shot that was taken somewhat before the actual shooting season for once.

Nice captire of the atmosphere of the day - hope the hand is better!

Comment left by: Chris Barker (no e-mail specified) What a great idea. I just hope that the old chaps were still able to enjoy lovely Dutch beer.

Comment left by: Wayne Harridge (no e-mail specified) You've captured some great expressions here - unique vehicle too !

Comment left by: M G Flink (no e-mail specified) Well done. You can hear the applause and the sound of the tank.

Comment left by: Earl Dunbar (no e-mail specified) Wow, this is wonderful. This past May I watched CBC coverage of this event, and the emotion present is beyond words. You have captured this very well. The range of feeling shown in the veterans' faces, as well as in the crowd, is a very good representation of the reality. While none of us who were not there can really feel it, I think you have brought us closer.

That driver has a huge responsibilty, piloting that monster between the people, and having limited view!!
