Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) I've looked at this image quite a few times now, and there's of course a hint that it is probably something small (as you use a 50mm Macro lens, and at f16 you still have a shallow DOF).
Perhaps the title 'watching' is also a word of play, in that it is actually a piece of the closing mechanism of a 'watch'???
The "grey snake with the green eyes" looks like it has a wooden texture. Part of a toy perhaps?!?
You've got me seriously puzzled here...

Comment left by: Ian Skelly (ian@skelly.eu) cat's eye's? if it is, it can't be the UK 'cos you survived the experience.

Comment left by: Charlie Geilfuss (no e-mail specified) For the life of me I can't figure out what this is.

Comment left by: Graeme Pow (graeme_1968@yahoo.co.uk) I was as equally scoobied as Olaf, but I was sure it looked familiar; and then it dawned on me... of course, it's one of those Catseye road studs! Love the low angle of view -- you must've had to lay flat on the road -- the distressed texture of the white surround, and the Mona Lisa-like way those green 'eyes' follow you around.

Comment left by: The photographer (no e-mail specified) I was deliberately vague about the subject to see what viewers made of it but now that it has been correctly identified I can give more detail. I was flat out in the middle of the road but the road is no longer in use having been by passed. The distressed texture of the white surround is the result of years of neglect and the rubber is badly perished. All the cats 'eyes' have long since gone but as is usual with any stretch of deserted road there was broken glass everywhere so I picked a couple of suitable pieces and placed them in the empty sockets. The pieces of glass were obviously of an irregular shape which I rounded off in PhotoShop.
One final point, I cannot claim originality for my shot having seen something similar many years ago when it was possible to take such a shot on a main road.
