Fishy beach

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Olaf Greve
Title: Fishy beach
Gear used: Olympus OM-4Ti + 16mm F3.5 Zuiko Fish-eye
Aperture used: f16
Shutter speed used: Around 1/125th (I think)
Film used: Fuji Provia 100F, 1/3rd step underexposed
Technical information: Nothing special. In order to get a 'low angle' effect, I had to almost put the camera down on the sand. By using a very small aperture, the DOF became enormous (not that that is all too difficult with something as wide as a 16mm). Also, in this shot no effort was made to keep the horizon straight by making it go through the centre of the picture. In other shots I did do this (and those also came out nicely), but in this shot I actually wanted the horizon to be well-curved. :)
Subject information: July 7th, 2006. A day at the beach. Unfortunately that very day the weather was not as sunny as it had been in the days before, but it so happened that that day we had to pick up my wife's new passport in the appropiate embassy in The Hague. A trip to Scheveningen (i.e. the beach near The Hague) was of course a logical way to spend the rest of the day. For the picture it was actually a good thing that it wasn't a very hot day then, as there are less tourists in the shot than typically would be the case on a summer's day, and the sky had some nice clouds that make the picture more interesting than having a straight blue sky.
Digital techniques: The slide was graciously scanned by Hans van Veluwen (thanks!!!), and he also tuned the colour balance and contrast slightly, in order to approach the original slide somewhat more. I myself only cropped a few pixels off of the top and the left, where a very slight "scanner-generated-line" was visible. Also, I sharpened the scan slightly.

Comment left by: Jay Drew (no e-mail specified) The idea of not placing the horizon in the center to get the curved effect works very well. I like the effect the surfer has being off center to the left. Well spotted.

Comment left by: Tim Hughes (no e-mail specified) Really nice, the 16mm is one of my favourite lenses. By using the fisheye you have emphasised the forground objects. If I had taken this, I might have tried to see the effect of setting focus a little closer.

Comment left by: Charlie Geilfuss (no e-mail specified) I like it...reminds me of the first Viking Lander shots.

Comment left by: Flemming Kristensen (no e-mail specified) Yes, I'm sure the guys at NASA would have loved to see a scenery like this trickle in on their monitors. Just the thing they have been looking for all along. I, of course, would gladly trade all those seashells for just one rather nice brunette in a skimpy bikini. Any chance of seing something like that in front of ol' Silvernose? Soon?

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) Flemming: if I were to get up that close with a fish-eye, I wouldn't be surprised if I were to find the subject trying to see how well it takes pictures of the inside of my throat. ;)

Comment left by: Flemming Kristensen (no e-mail specified) Yes, allright. There's a picture we definitely wouldn't like to see in tope 29.
