Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Mike Lazzari
Title: Fruit bowl
Gear used: OM-4Ti on tripod w/ 50/2. (I think it was the 50/2 but I'm not sure as it's been a while) Also used a Smith-Victor light on stand.
Diaphragm: f16 or so to get the DOF
Shutter speed: relatively slow
Film used: Fuji superia 400
Technical information: Set up the tripod and used the light to add some contrast. Processed the image (Costco scan) in CS2.
Subject information: We try to keep this bowl on the kitchen counter filled with good things to eat and also pleasant to look at. I grew the squash myself.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) I like this shot a lot, as I find the colours and composition to be very pleasing.
Funnily enough, that shiny toaster with its lovely reflections, takes the focus away a bit from the 'food part' of the subject, but it works so nice in this picture that it would be an entirely different picture without it.
I wonder what a polariser would have done to the reflections in this picture. Perhaps it would have eliminated the reflection on the stone table?

Comment left by: Fernando (no e-mail specified) Very interesting still life due to a careful study of illumination. The reflection on the stone table doesn't bother me, but the shadow under the bowl does and what bothers me most is that I cannot imagine how to deal with it. Perhaps a little more saturation/contrast on the 'food part' might have balanced this wonderfully unbalanced composition. Great picture, thanks for sharing.

Comment left by: Brian Swale (no e-mail specified) I like this study as well. Well composed, colours not in conflict, and interesting variety of fruit. As to what Fernando asks, as far as I know, there are options in PS that enable you to select high-tones, mid-tones etc for editing, so selecting for dark and altering curves ( or something similar) should do the trick.

Comment left by: Flemming Kristensen (no e-mail specified) Yes, it's hard to please everyone, isn't it? Mike sets up a light from above to get more contrast, and the rest of us start moaning about the shadows. The problem is of course that the toaster will reveal any kind of light which could soften up the shadow under the bowl. It seems to me that softening the light from above a little would let the light coming in through the window become more dominant, thus filling in the shadow a bit. Whether or not Mike would like the lessened contrast is another matter.

I like the picture as it is.

Comment left by: Fernando (no e-mail specified) Agree Flemming, specially on the .

Perhaps I didn't make myself clear: what I intended to underline was that this is a challenging composition, it poses problems I woudn't know how to deal with (aside of digital manipulation).

Comment left by: Fernando (no e-mail specified) ... specially on the -revealing toasters-; seems html doesn't like these: <>
