Going in Circles

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Chip Stratton
Title: Going in Circles
Gear used: OM4Ti + Zuiko 85mm/2.0
Diaphragm: f2.8
Shutter speed: probably near 1/125
Film used: Kodak E100VS
Technical information: Handheld, available light in the shade on a sunny day
Subject information: The color and drama of this carousel horse caught my eye, and the interesting background bokeh made it a 'must shoot'. I might have been able to position background elements better, but to keep the horse in the same shallow plane of focus my options were limited. This is a lens that, given its design purpose should give good bokeh, and I don't think it fails.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (ogreve@hotmail.com) Very nice bokeh indeed, especially the bokeh on the ropes is really nice.
I really like the composition too.

Comment left by: bbbean (bbbean@beancotton.com) Don't think I've ever seen a redheaded horse before!

Noce shot. Great composition.

Comment left by: Warren Kato (wkato@aol.com) I like this shot (made with a lens I want). Nice background that matches the main subject.

Comment left by: Tim Hughes (Hi100@aol.com) I like the different shapes, cicular and linear images showing in the bokeh. I would have liked to have it printed a little lighter particularly the top background.

Comment left by: Alasdair Mackintosh (vanda@dtn.ntl.com) One of the better examples of the practical use of bokeh. If the depth of field had been greater, the horse would have merged in to the background. As it is, the use of a wide aperture makes the horse stand out vividly from a similarly-coloured background.

Good shot.

Comment left by: Ray Moth (ray_moth@yahoo.com) Maybe it's just my eyes or my LCD computer screen, but the eye of the horse seems slightly out of focus. I alos think the picture would have bben better composed if the horse's head were positioned slightly higher. Apart from that nit-picking, I love the bokeh. It's just right and the picture would have been too confusing if the backgraound had been in focus.

Comment left by: Paul Schings (ZuikoholicRI@aol.com) I like the bokeh, especially in the highlights on the lower right. The composition is appealing as well, the way the horse splits the bright lower right background from the darker background in the upper left.

Comment left by: Gregg Iverson (giverson@webkorner.com) to me the angle of the horse and the expression on the face give a sense of urgency that is offset by the soft background.
