Small Rodent Family

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Mike Butler
Title: Small Rodent Family
Gear used: OM-2s + Vivitar Series 1 (67mm Filter) 70-210 @~150mm
Diaphragm: f4.5
Shutter speed: 1/250 ?
Film used: Costco 200 ASA.
Technical information: Trying for Bokeh. Hand held. I'm not sure of the shutter speed, after conversing with them for several minutes my Daughter decided to try for a closer inspection, all thoughts of photography momentarily forgotten. At least they build better fences around the more desirable residents.
Subject information: This is a small family of (Type unknown to me) small furry creatures in the Knowland Park Zoo in Oakland, California.

Comment left by: Gary Edwards (no e-mail specified) Meerkats? "Timon, come home!"

Comment left by: Charles Packard (packardc@hiwaay.net) They are Meerkats from Africa. A very nice family portrait.

Comment left by: Ray Moth (ray_moth@yahoo.com) Composition is good. To me, the bokeh is insufficient in this shot - it's there but maybe the meerkats (if that's what they are) were too close to the grass behind them to achieve good bokeh with a lens of, I would guess, a fairly narrow maximum aperture. This might have worked better with a 135mm prime wide open.

Comment left by: Jay Maynard (jmaynard@conmicro.cx) Definitely meerkats. Nothing else looks quite so funny.

I can see why the zoom was the lens of choice for the day, but if you were trying for bokeh, I agree with Ray that the DOF is just a little too great to succeed.

Comment left by: owl-luvr (no e-mail specified) Those are meerkats! :) They look like they're having a 'family conference.'
