Shetland Sheepdog Puppy

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's Name: Chris O'Neill
Title: Shetland Sheepdog Puppy
Location: Glacier View Dog Show
Courtenay, British Columbia, Canada
Date: August 9, 2000 (Yeah, I'm a little ahead of the starting date... so sue me!!!)
Equipment: Olympus OM-2 + Zuiko 50/1.8 (handheld)
Film: Kirkland (Agfa) ISO 200 Print Film
Technical Information: I'm not sure of the aperture, and the camera was set in Auto Mode, but we were in the shadows so the aperature was well open and the shutter speed was pretty slow. I'm surprised I actually got a clear picture, since I wasn't using a tripod.
Post Processing: The original print was scanned (HP 3200C) into Adobe Photodeluxe Home Edition. The image was then cleaned-up and saved to JPG format. (No major retouching or color adjustments were made... Only a little contrast/brightness adjustment and dust removal.)

The resulting JPG file was then loaded into Vueprint for final cropping and sizing.

Subject Information: My girlfriend and I were visiting her friend on Vancouver Island. The friend was working at a dog show, so we went and walked around for awhile. This is one of the cutest puppies I saw at the show. I'm not sure if photo has "good" bokah or "bad" bokah... I just think this is a darned nice shot!

Comment left by: Steve Goss (steveg3@flash.net) Is it just me, or does anyone else get a sense of concentric circles in the patterns of the grass?
Yes, a very nice shot.

Comment left by: bbbean (bbbean@beancotton.com) Now that you mention it...

Comment left by: siddiq (siddim01@student.ucr.edu) where is the epicenter? i've stared at this forever and still no circles :( (or should that be a :) ?)

Comment left by: Gary Edwards (no e-mail specified) At about the dog's left eye, Acer.

Comment left by: siddiq (siddim01@student.ucr.edu) gotcha! very faint, but found it by trying hard enough :) thanks.

Comment left by: Ray Moth (ray_moth@yahoo.com) I would like this more if the dog's coat had all been in focus, with only the grass out of focus. I like the composition.

Comment left by: Jay Maynard (jmaynard@conmicro.cx) I like this one overall, though a tiny bit of fill underneath the dog's chin would have helped. I like the coat just the way it is - it conveys to me just how soft the coat is in real life. Pet a Sheltie puppy and you'll see what I mean.

Comment left by: Paul Schings (ZuikoholicRI@aol.com) I wish Steve hadn't mentioned the concentric circle thing. I hadn't noticed it before, but now that I have it's like a bad song you can't get out of your head! I suspect it may be an artifact of the scanning, but I'm not sure. Trying to ignore the circles, I like the image a lot, but the red leash is a little distracting.

Comment left by: Lex (lexjenkins@hotmail.com) Before I even read anyone else's comments the first thing I thought was "This photo is making me dizzy!" That puppy has some kinda hypno-trance thing goin' on. Good thing the eye and fur are sharp or I'd fall outta my seat. This is a funky, funny and very weird image. I like it. It would be great on a doggie calendar.

Comment left by: Gregg Iverson (giverson@webkorner.com) To me there is a sense of motion that is fitting for a puppy. Only the head seems to be still and not blurred or moving. Cute.

Comment left by: Chris O'Neill (coneill@nucleus.com) Thanks for all the comments, folks! Personally, I don't see the concentric circles y'all been talking 'bout. Someone wanna send me a private e-mail and tell me how to cross my eyes properly so that I, too, can see it?

Regarding the focus, in the original picture all of the dog is pretty-well in focus. I have a *very* old scanner (HP3200C), and all my scans show alot of "dust" that I then remove digitally. Unfortunately, that softens the images somewhat. The "crappy scanner" excuse may also explain the "dizzying circles"... I'll have to look at the original and see.

Regarding the leash, I tried removing it (and also the distracting black shadow at the top of the photo), but totally mucked it up. Several attempts led to the same result... telltale lines where the leash used to be. So, in the end, I decided to just leave the leash and shadow in.

Btw, Jay is right... this little guy's (gal's?) was *really* soft a fuzzy! Petting him (her?) was almost like petting a cotton ball!

Again, thanks for the comments... both postive *and* constructive criticisms!
