Spiky

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Dylan Sutton
Title: Spiky
Gear used: OM1, Zuiko 35-70 f3.5-4.5 @ 35mm, Olympus and no frills Auto extension tubes
Diaphragm: Lens set on f11, effective aperture unknown
Shutter speed: 1/15s
Film used: Fuji Provia F
Technical information: Natural lighting, small pinkish reflector (my palm!) just to left of frame. Camera was tripod mounted, mirror lock-up, hand press shutter release. The lens was extended by about 44 mm and was near the closest focus point. Scanned at 1200dpi, HP S20 scanner. The frame was cropped for width only, resized and an unsharp mask was applied in Photoshop.
Subject information: Yet another macro entry for the Bokeh TOPE! The flower in this picture is growing on the edge of our herb garden at home - the background is an oregano plant and some reddish sandstone blocks. The spider was a bit frisky, but decided to cooperate for this picture. The little 35-70 puts in a remarkably good performance when extended to greater than 1:1 reproduction. For my alternative ugly bokeh entry, this shot was taken with the OM1, Zuiko 500/8 handheld at 1/250s also on Provia F.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (ogreve@hotmail.com) Nice, nice, NICE!
Very good composition; definitely a keeper!

Comment left by: bbbean (bbbean@beancotton.com) I like this a lot. Color is great, detail is sharp, but most of all, I love that it's a spider instead of a bee on the flower. Had it been a bee, it would have been a great shot, but nothing surprising. As it is, I did an immediate double take. One for the portfolio.

Comment left by: Charles packard (packardc@hiwaay.net) I really like the contrast between the dark soft background against the sharp whiteness of the petals. The way the eye is first drawn there, then...oh spider! A great shot!

Comment left by: siddiq (siddim01@student.ucr.edu) one of my fav tope3 entries. i'd have cropped it square.

Comment left by: Alasdair Mackintosh (alasdair.mackintosh@eu.citrix.com) Great shot, which must have been technically very difficult. (Notice how the spider is perfectly focussed, but even the closest parts of the flower are slightly blurred.)

Comment left by: the photographer (no e-mail specified) Siddiq, I was going to crop it square too, but that would have lost most of the background bokeh, of which I like the smooth texture.
unfortunately the spiines on the spider do not show up well in the small version of the picture. A slightly larger (and uncropped, 915x632) version is at

Comment left by: siddiq (no e-mail specified) getting errors on both the link in subject info the link in comment above... good point about the cropping.

Comment left by: Jay Maynard (jmaynard@conmicro.cx) Definitely worth a second look. The background is just right.

Comment left by: Justin Blows (jblows@oftc.usyd.edu.au) Nice pic
