Red on red

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Mike Cormier
Title: Red on red
Gear used: OM-1 + 50/3.5 + 14mm extension tube + tripod + cable release.
Diaphragm: f3.5
Shutter speed: 1/30
Film used: Fuji Superia 200 ASA.
Technical information: I used the extension tube to get that extra bit of magnified detail. Photo was taken on a mildly overcast day, but no flash was necessary.
Subject information: Not sure of the flower's name, I came across it growing wild near an abandoned house & had to capture it. The background was desaturated in Photoshop, but the flower is untouched with no digital manipulation.

Comment left by: Jay Maynard (jmaynard@conmicro.cx) The picture almost looks like a red flower on black and white background to me. How'd you desaturate just the background? Selecting just the flower could be a real bear...

Comment left by: Barry Bean (bbbean@beancotton.com) WOW! Nice shot to start with, but your photoshop work really brings the subject out. The ONLY thing I'd cnage in an ideal world would be to add a little bit of fill flash

Comment left by: Giles (no e-mail specified) Nicely done. I like the very vague sister flower in the background in monochrome, really sets of the one in focus.

Comment left by: Mike Cormier (ronaldcormier@hotmail.com) Believe it or not, selection was done painstakingly by hand with the manual lassoo at 400% magnification over about 2.5 hours. There are easier ways, but this was my first attempt at it.
