Rose

Submitter's name: Christoph Hertzler
Title: Rose
Gear used: OM-4Ti + 2.0/90
Diaphragm: f4 (probably)
Shutter speed: 1/125 (autoexposure)
Film used: Kodakcolor Gold 400.
Technical information: I used the 90mm at a relatively large aperture, to get an unobstrusive background, with only an indication of the rose bud. The problem was, to get still enough depth of field for the rose. I think the aperture I choose was the best compromise. I used evening day light handheld.
Subject information: It is just a rose in our garden. I don't know more about the subject, I wanted to create a simple, pleasing image, with the right combination of sharpness and softness, which characterizes a rose. So my picture is probably not a real Bokeh example, because the Bokeh/background is not the most important feature in the picture. But a bad Bokeh could have ruined the picture.

Comment left by: Giles (no e-mail specified) I think you achieved your objectives nicely. The smooth background sets off the sharp rose in a very complimentary fashion.

Comment left by: Steve Goss (steveg3@flash.net) I feel that the bokeh is important feature of this picture. Because it is so soft, it provides the right contrast to the sharply focused rose.

Comment left by: Ray Moth (ray_moth@yahoo.com) Did you deliberatley choose to have the outer petals out of focus? While the bokeh is really good in this picture, I would have liked it even better if the entire rose had been sharp.

Comment left by: Author (no e-mail specified) Ray, you are right. But it was a compromise between good Bokeh and sharp object. Closing one or two aperture stops more would give to much depth of field for the background.

Comment left by: Jay Maynard (jmaynard@conmicro.cx) Very nice, smooth image. One kvetch, though: the blossom (?) to the lower left pulls the eye away from the subject.

Comment left by: Paul Schings (ZuikoholicRI@aol.com) I disagree, I think the soft background is what makes this image work so well. I might have moved the rose even a little more to the lower right, mostly because I like the background in the upper left better, it's much softer.

Comment left by: Keith Berry (k.berry@telinco.co.uk) I find this is a really evocative picture of a rose and I can almost smell it. I never think of deliberately using an aperture wider than f11 at this range. Must try it.

Comment left by: Barry H (bhinderks@sprint.ca) I keep trying to get images like this but haven't cut the grade yet. Great shot!

Comment left by: Dominik Hertzler (dominikh@softhome.net) Nice picture daddy!!!
