Beach Blanket Bokeh

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Paul Schings
Title: Beach Blanket Bokeh
Gear used: OM-2S + 65-200/4 Zuiko
Diaphragm: f 8 (I think)
Shutter speed: 1/1000 (approx.)
Film used: Agfa HDC 200
Technical information: Very much a "from the hip" shot using aperture priority auto on the OM-2S. 4x6 print scanned on an Epson flatbed scanner.
Subject information: I was sitting on the beach with my 5 year old daughter (she was using a Fuji disposable) taking shots of some gulls on the ground about 40 feet in front of us, when this gull came flying down the beach, I just pointed and shot quickly without even verifying focus. I hadn't even been thinking about TOPE 3 at the time, but when the shot came back I liked the softness in the foreground rocks as well as the highlights on the water. I don't often think of bokeh in terms of foreground, but I think it's an integral part of this image.

Comment left by: Mike Butler (abutler@flash.net) I really like this picture, but if asked I would say the foreground "bokeh" would be bad. I find it distracting from the rest of the picture. This is however just my uninformed opinion.

Comment left by: siddiq (siddim01@student.ucr.edu) perhaps it would have worked better shot wide open: sharp contrast of focussed gull against the rest. as it is, quite impressive for a grab shot!

Comment left by: Jay Maynard (jmaynard@conmicro.cx) I'm not sure he'd have gotten the shot at all wide open, though: the gull's not quite sharp as it is, and another two stops less depth of field would probably have blown the picture entirely - not to mention that he'd have run out of shutter speed that way.

I don't mind the foreground, myself, though given my preference, I'd have it more in focus and the waves less so.

Comment left by: Gregg Iverson (giverson@webkorner.com) I think Jay is right. Speaking hypothetically, an out-of-focus water would have helped define the gull. I do know how hard it is to capture flying birds in flight though, so no complaints about this shot.
