Cactus Flower

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Ian Manners
Title: Cactus Flower
Gear used: OM2n + Zuiko 100mm f2.8, handheld with LED lighting
Diaphragm: F2.8
Shutter speed: Not noted but would have been low.
Film used: Fujicolor Superia Reala 100
Technical information: Several underexposed shots (ok, took about 20) of varing degrees to capture the right balance of warmth, dynamic range, and grain.
Very much experimenting.
Subject information: Trying to find something that I can identify with Walt was difficult but I finally decided he was a prickly coot with more than one soft spot, and the cactus leapt out at me. I liked so many of these shots but having to chose one for this purpose I chose the opening flowers minus the prickly old bugger they are attached to. The shot was taken on 16th November 2007.

Comment left by: Chris (no e-mail specified) That was a good idea and you have an interesting shot there.

Comment left by: Dan (no e-mail specified) This is a great example of why grain can be a good thing -- very nice!

Comment left by: Jay Drew (no e-mail specified) I like this a lot. The muted colors and softeness combine with the grain to make a picture that could have been a painting. Walt might have noted that you can achieve the same effect by consuming substantial quantites of alcohol. What kind of LED lighting?

Comment left by: Photographer (no e-mail specified) Hi Jay

Yes, same effect could have been achieved with a good Bourbon but then everyone would have to have the same to get the desired effect :o)

One white LED in each of the 3 flowers, had to find some flat batteries to drive the inverters as they were to bright originally, easier than adding resisters to the leads. Background is lit with LED garden lights and a torch. In hindsight would have been a lot easier to test with a digital camera first but it spoils the fun of waiting to see what did and didn't work.
