Paperweight Swirl

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Graeme Pow
Title: Paperweight Swirl
Gear used: E-1 + Zuiko Digital 50mm f2.0 + tripod
Diaphragm: f2.8
Shutter speed: 1/5 second
Media used: SanDisk Extreme III 2GB CompactFlash Card
Technical information: I knew that I wanted to take a photo of this paperweight but I wasn't altogether happy with my choice of background -- either in situ on my window ledge or on a piece of cloth -- as it just didn't look right. I had a breakthrough as I was levering a number of mirrored tiles off my living room wall one Sunday; why not use one of these? I thought. I did, and took the shot from above to eliminate any reflections in the mirror other than of the paperweight itself. I processed the resulting raw file in LightZone and tweaked the contrast using the built-in Polarizer function to bring out a little more detail.
Subject information: Sometimes the best subjects are those that are staring you in the face. In this case the paperweight -- a Christmas gift -- is often the first thing that catches your eye when you walk in the room, especially if the sun hits it.

Comment left by: siddiq (no e-mail specified) I'd have taken it for a marble!

Comment left by: The Photographer (no e-mail specified) I know what you mean, Siddiq, it does look like a marble in the picture. It's actually quite large: 4 inches across at its widest part.

Thank you very much for your kind words, Wayne -- that means a lot to me as I really respect your work.

Comment left by: yatu (no e-mail specified) that is soo cool! im no photographer but i like the super clear details and it is one of five of my favs...pretty pretty...:)

Comment left by: Michael Collins (no e-mail specified) I really like the crisp and detailed centre and the progressive softening as you move away from there. (Sorry - that sounds like a candy bar left out of the fridge...)
