Niagara Gorge Reflections

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Mike and Marnie Gordon
Title: Niagara Gorge Reflections
Gear used: OM-2 + Tam SP 35-105, EC-2, RRS L-bracket, Tripod.
Diaphragm: f11
Shutter speed: Auto -1/3
Film used: Kod UC 100.
Technical information: Everything of interest was at infinity so elected to use sweet spot of lens. Added a small amount compensation to reduce chance of clipping highlights. Highlights trimmed in PS per Moose.
Subject information: While visiting my mother in Niagara Falls, Co-photog spotted this view of the Niagara River and the Rainbow Bridge looking from the NY state side of the Niagara River gorge towards Canada. The mist from the American and  Horseshoe Falls is visible in the distance. We had taken my mother to a play at the Festival Theater in Niagara on the Lake and then to dinner, so we could not get to the Falls at dusk, which may have been the optimal time. My mother, who is in her eighties insisted on hiking along the river with us while we set up the shots. Co-photog. spotted this shot despite the fact that I grew up in Niagara Falls. We negotiated on the framing--no crop performed.

Interesting story regarding how a collaborative co-photographer sees more than one who's grown accustomed to the place.
And very instructive for me those technical tricks: I would have never thought of underexposing 1/3, but now I realize it's perfectly logical; I've suffered of clipping highlights for long at night shots ... blaming the average reading of the OM 2 instead of my ignorance. Now I'd like to know more about this, what does 'highlights trimmed' mean - when / where did Moose wrote on this ? - Congratulations: four people involved and one awesome landscape captured - lucky you, I work alone and unsupported most if not all of the time, I was convinced that photography ( unless commercial ) was a lonely task which not even love could help.

Comment left by: Wiliam Wagenaar (wiliam@orange.nl) The mist and the movements of the water make this photo, together with the colors of the city.

Comment left by: Jerry (proud_texan63@yahoo.com) Beautiful, I've been there and this shot captures the colors and mist just like I remember.

Comment left by: Mike (usher99@aol.com) Thanks for your comments, Fernando. Highlight adjustment in CS3 was used. I sent Moose my scan and best PP--the Ferris wheel lights were on the verge of being clipped prior to adjustment. It was a bit hazy so a bit of LCE was applied. The Moose version sky was a tad lighter and Marnie and I preferred it, so we used that. Moose left the full .psd file on his web site (thanks, again) --I printed one fairly large for my brother who greatly appreciated it.
