Ageing Iron

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Chip Stratton
Title: Ageing Iron
Gear used: OM4T, Zuiko 90mm/f2
Diaphragm: f8
Shutter speed: 1/250
Film used: Fuji Provia F
Technical information: Visiting the wife's family this fall, I was overwhelmed with cabin fever.
Fortunately, the OM gear provided an outlet, and I went out for a walk looking to shoot almost anything. This vent on a cast-iron barbecue was interesting because of the texture of the metal and it's corrosion. It looks better in B&W, so after scanning the Provia, I sucked all the color out of it and upped the contrast. I would like to reshoot it sometime with a tripod and some different compositions, but I still like the image.

Tack sharp, and I wouldn't quickly have guessed what it was if you wouldn't have told me.

Comment left by: Alasdair Mackintosh (vanda@dtn.ntl.com) Great texture and lighting.

I was wondering, though, if you might not get a better
effect by cropping it less tightly, so that the bolt head on the right hand side isn't cut in half by the edge of the picture? It would give a better 3-D effect, I think, if the whole bolt was visible.

Comment left by: Chip Stratton (cstrat@tulsa.com) I wanted to use that bolt more prominently, but since it was out of focus decided not to. What I really would have liked is more DOF, to make the bolt sharp too - hence the wish for a tripod.
