My guess was either wood rings or a part of a painting. Quickly checking the "solution page" shows that it's not quite that, but that I wasn't very far off...

This was fun. And I recognized Chr*s right away from the phrasing. ;^) Okay, the image looks like a skull image in wood rings. But I wasn't able to guess the actual subject source.

The funny thing is that the face can be easier recognised from the thumbnail than from the picture above.
It kinda resembles "Jesus'" (?) facial imprint on the shroud of Turin.

Now, if this had been Lex Jenkins' photo, I would have guessed a hardwood, a very, very hard wood. Still "stumped." Good job and interesting abstract.
