Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Christoph Hertzler
Title: Steel art
Gear used: OM-1n + 100/2.8 SC + QA 310 flash + slave flash
Diaphragm: f11 or f16
Shutter speed: 1/30
Film used: Kodak "Farbwelt" FA 100 print film
Technical information: I used a AQ 310 flash from the right side, bounced from a wall, plus a slave flash from the left (with not much effect...).
Scanned from a 10x15 cm print with HP ScanJet 6350C. Some sharpening applied.
Subject information: Truck axle, laser welded. The horizontal seam is the laser weld.
The side length (diameter) of the axle is about 12 cm, the welded wall thickness is 12 mm; such a weld takes only 30 sec; the laser costs >1 Mill. $.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) It's funny to note the "face" in the top centre part of the composition :)

Comment left by: Steve Goss (no e-mail specified) I didn't notice the face until I read Olaf's comment. That's a real abstract. It's too bad the other axles aren't facing the same direction, you would have sort of an interplay between the "people". On the other hand, maybe the other two are shunning the one in the middle, which would explain the "oh no" expression.

Comment left by: Lex (lexjenkins@hotmail.com) There's a Japanese photographer, featured in Pop Photo a while back, who specializes in finding "faces" in inanimate objects. But he uses a N*k*n so he's DQ'd. Outstanding tone, texture and sharpness in this image.

Comment left by: Gary Edwards (no e-mail specified) I like the composition as well as the whimsy of the face. The cleverly-done lighting offsets the perfectly centered subject with the lighted bands on the adjacent axles.

Lovely bead. My compliments to the welder designer.

Comment left by: Alasdair Mackintosh (vanda@dtn.ntl.com) Great lighting, which brings out the texture of the material perfectly.

I like to composition too, with the central element flanked by two out-of-focus units on either side. The left-hand axle is quite blurred, which adds to the sense of depth.

I wonder if slightly tighter cropping would improve this? There's a slight asymmetry, in that the edge of left-hand axle is visible, whereas the right-hand one is out of the frame. Would cropping the left hand edge help to balance the composition?
