Death in the City

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Brian Swale
Title: Death in the City
Gear used: OM-4Ti + 28-48mm f/4 S Zuiko (multi-coated) + tripod. Self-timer used to obtain the sharpest image possible.
Diaphragm: f/8
Shutter speed: Not recorded; probably 1/100 - 1/250 or thereabouts.
Film used: Fuji Reala Superia 100 asa print film
Technical information: Scanned with a CanoScan FS-4000US scanner, re-sized and sharpened mildly, and the file size reduced from 500 to about 125kb using IrfanView. File size reduction done to keep the size within reasonable bounds. No other image manipulation done; I am very happy with the scan result from the CanoScan.

At the same time this shot was taken I used an E-series camera, and when I got the prints back I could see much more detail from film, whereas I had been unable to extract more from the digital image - especially in the shadow areas. There was a useful amount of cloud about to reduce shadow density.
Subject information: The is a European lime tree (Tilia europea) which went into hibernation for winter, and never came out of it alive. It is situated in Cathedral Square in Christchurch, where European / English trees abound. (It's a rather sparse forest though, I have to say). Once I saw this tree I felt there could be a race against time to photograph it before the city arborists came and made it vanish.

Comment left by: siddiq (no e-mail specified) HDR-ish, slightly. maybe I'm too used to digital to recognize what film looks like!
