Submitter's name: Brian Swale
Title: Magnolia flower as seen
Gear used: Olympus E-510 + manual Zuiko 50/3.5 macro lens; tripod, bright lateral sunlight
Diaphragm: f/11
Shutter speed: 1/640
Film used: 4/3 sensor @ 100 ASA.
Technical information: I have several favourite lenses, and the 5-/3.5 macro is very much one of them. Others are the Zuiko 100/2, and the 35-105.
Subject information: Fifty-four years ago I was a first-year university student in a Botany class, and this day towards the end of the year - it must have been Spring, since magnolias were in flower, we were given a soulangea magnolia flower. The botany practicals were heavily weighted to detailed examination of the floral structure of flowering plants, since that is what the taxonomy is largely based on. So we had to dissect and draw the general features of the plants, and what we found in dissection; particularly the floral structure and the ovary structure.
I had never seen one of these flowers before and was amazed (and delighted) at the beauty before me. I spent far too much time trying to capture this beauty with pencil and paper. What you see is my best effort. I am gathering up belongings as I prepare to move house, and came across my old Bot. Lab. sketch-book. I thought it fitting to record this old drawing of mine using the Zuiko 50/3.5 I had intended to use film but ran out of time ...
