Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's Name: Steve Goss
Title: A friend of my son / A son of my friend
Gear used: OM1n, Tokina 50-200 macro zoom @200mm. Hand held
Diaphragm / shutter speed: Unknown. About F5.6 @125th
Film used: Fuji Superia 400
Technical information: Point, fiddle with the aperture, fiddle with the shutter speed, fiddle with the focus, fiddle with the zoom, try to hold still, shoot.
Subject information: My Sunday school class was having it's annual Chili cookoff. Between serving up "My daughter's earring chili" and playing with the sound system, I wandered around taking pictures of people. I noticed this victim, er, subject just sitting there as I walked out to the playground. He saw me taking the picture, but didn't seem to mind.

Comment left by: BBB (bbbean@beancotton.com) Not too shabby, but I think I would have cropped a little closer.

Comment left by: anonymous for the moment (no e-mail specified) It is cropped already, and I thought about cropping more, but I wanted to let the setting be obvious. Quite different from the abstract exhibit, where the goal was to be non-obvious. How tightly would you have cropped it, Barry?

Comment left by: John Pendley (jpendley@mail.tds.net) Sounds like a complete day, capped with a grand picture. Nah, kids don't mind; his openness is one of the best things about this picture. (Aren't portraits about the subject?) He's in his element, the playground, and you've shown that admirably; no cropping, please. It may be a grabshot, but there's a lot of knowhow here.

Comment left by: Eric Pederson (epederso@darkwing.uoregon.edu) I'll vote for further cropping. Since the pillar to the far right is the most in focus item, I find it distracting to the image. Cutting it out puts the child in soft focus which is entirely appropriate for the subject. I would balance by cropping out about 1/2 that amount of cropping on the left side. The elements above the child's head will easily show the environment. Get a copy of the photo to the family!

Comment left by: Jodi Jakeway (jjakeway@iserv.net) I like the background and all the repeating circles, nice shot of a happy little guy at the playground. The colors seem a bit washed out to me for Fuji film.
