Mother and Daughter

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Wayne Harridge
Title: Mother and Daughter
Gear used: OM-2N + 35-70mm f4 @70mm
Aperture: f5.6
Shutter speed: Auto, around 1/250 sec.
Film used: Kodak EliteChrome ExtraColor
Technical information: Auto Exposure.
Sunlight, quite contrasty.
Since this film has high contrast and saturation the image was modified in Paintshop Pro to reduce both contrast and saturation. Some cropping to improve composition.
Basically all the conditions were working against a good portrait, but I thought the expressions on the 2 subjects were worth an attempt.
Subject information: The girl had just taken part in a dance display at a local festival and came off stage to meet her mother. The shot was completely unposed and I have no idea who the two people are.

Comment left by: Barry Bean (bbbean@beancotton.com) Mom looks like Paul McCartney! But seriously, this is a nice event shot. In a perfect world, some fill flash would take this from good to great. Good work.

Comment left by: C.H.Ling (chling@glink.net.hk) Nice and natural candid shot! you captured the lovely facial expressions. It would be even nicer if you have used a longer lens and larger aperture to out-focus the background.

Comment left by: Anonymous Visitor Just send me your 180mm f2.8 CH !

Comment left by: Chip Stratton (cstrat@tulsa.com) I know why you took this picture! I'm surprised the mother is smiling as close as you must have been moving in with that 35-70....

Comment left by: John Pendley (jpendley@mail.tds.net) If this were "just a grabshot," the highlight might have been on the mother's face. But it's right where it belongs. Accident or a good photog's eye? The expressions say it all. Some portrature is elaborately staged; some is extemporaneous. This is a fine picture.

Comment left by: Jim Caldwell (jimcaldwell@iname.com) Great moment captured on film! I have a feeling that a moment earlier or later would have spoiled the shot. You caught it just right!

Comment left by: Jodi Jakeway (jjakeway@iserv.net) You couldn't have set up better lighting in a studio....love the way the light highlights mom's hair and the side of daughter's face....perfect job catching the moment! I really love this films colors.

Comment left by: Oben (dunya@one.net.au) I'd really like to see the unmodified version of this photo to see what computers can do to enhance photos. For me this is a largely unexplored area for me.
This photo has everything a candid photo needs: The lighting, the moment, and the beautiful subjects... the one on the right anyhow ;)
