Alex Under The Bed

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Chris Barrett
Title: Alex Under The Bed
Gear used: OM-2n + 24/2.8 + tripod.
Diaphragm: f5.6 (I think!)
Shutter speed: Several Seconds
Film used: Jessops 100 ASA.
Technical information: I just went for a raw shot. No flash even for fill in. No color correction filter. The only light source is a rotating fibre-optic bundle lamp in the photo at the rhs. I needed the 24mm because of the very confined space.
Subject information: My 13 year old son has one of these high beds with a playing space beneath. He fills this with bean bags, books, toys (mainly Lego), gameboys, and anything else he happens to require, and just hangs out. Sometimes the dogs go and join him. On this particular day he was experimenting with light sources, and had set up fibre-optic lamp beneath as well.

Comment left by: Barry Bean (bbbean@beancotton.com) A very cool spot. I wish alex's face were a little sharper, but this shot gives a great feel for the atmosphere. A wall hanger.

Comment left by: Eric Pederson (epederso@darkwing.uoregon.edu) How did you get your son to hold still for several seconds??? My son Alex won't do that while sleeping!!!
Lovely mood to the shot. It might be nice to blur some of the other features in the shot to balance out the slight motion of his face and increase the atmosphere to a more abstract level.

Comment left by: John Pendley (jpendley@mail.tds.net) I seem to be missing what everybody else is saying about all these pictures as I view them tonight. This picture is all about secrecy, privacy. The angle, the color, and the composition, the out-of-focus face all say that. This isn't just a wallhanger, it's immediately communicative and mysterious. It's art. I'm all too aware of the high that comes when you think you've doing it right. You must be on cloud nine.

Comment left by: Jim Caldwell (jimcaldwell@Iname.com) Amazing picture - I can't believe that your son was able to hold still that long - I know I couldn't! I would have liked a little more light on Alex's face - but I'm being picky!

Comment left by: Steve Goss (steveg3@flash.net) You could have added more light, could have used a filter to cut down the red cast, but if you had, it would have been sterile, a throw away image.

first one I had to have a closer look at. I like the
effect of the fibre-optic lighting...neat idea and
execution.
