Rachel in lavender

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Joel Wilcox
Title: Rachel in lavender
Gear used: OM-2N, 35-80/2.8
Diaphragm: 5.6
Shutter speed: Auto mode (approx. 1/125 sec)
Film used: Professional Ektachrome E200
Technical information: I used a white plastic rectangular tub lid for some reflective fill opposite the muted south window light on the left side of the photo. I handheld the camera.
Subject information: My 5-year-old was on a cheerleader kick. She pulled the tassles off the handle grips of her bicycle and was using them for pom-poms. She sat in this informal portrait setting for 5 or 6 shots on the condition that I would do a full-length photo at the end, which you can see here.

Also, you've shown very nicely that the 35-80/2.8 is an excellent lens for portraits.

Comment left by: Dave Bulger (david_bulger@austintx.net) I remember this little girl! Great pose, the soft lighting is perfect. You also managed to hold the E200's inherent (too much) contrast down. Excellent work!

Comment left by: Barry Bean (bbbean@beancotton.com) What a cutie! In a perfect world, I wish the reflector would have reflected about an extra 1/2 stop on the right side, but that's nitpicking. A great shot of a natural chamrer.

Comment left by: Simon E. (no e-mail specified) Lovely shot, perfect composition, with a beautiful and co-operative sitter. Like BB, I'd prefer to see the more light in the shadow side of the face. Everything else is great. IMHO E200 is a great choice of film here.

Comment left by: Julian (no e-mail specified) Unfair! Asian kids are just too attractive to be allowed to compete with most Caucasians! That aside, I agree with other comments - very appealing and well-executed shot, would like a bit more light on the shadow side.

Comment left by: Mitch Zeissler (zeissleica@aol.com) Very, very nice.

Comment left by: Lama (no e-mail specified) Wow. I thought for sure this was shot on digital. The color has Lind-like 3-D gradations. It's a sweet picture, as everyone noticed. Really nice.
