Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) This is simply brilliant!
Excellent subject which tells a story in itself, great bokeh, just the right amount of DOF, good timing, great framing, nice colours, in short: it's all there.
This may well be my favourite entry this time, brilliant work which shows the power of the 300/4.5 in the hands (pun intended :) ) of a capable photographer.

Comment left by: Barry Bean (bbbean@beancotton.com) Handheld 300mm with K64? Even if this guy didn't have a classic mug, and the composition wasn't great, I'd be impressed!

Comment left by: John Pendley (jpendley@mail.tds.net) YES! Lighting, framing, expression; this has it all. Perhaps the most arresting element of this picture, as grand as it is, is the red mallets juxtaposed against this guy's "red" expression. Priceless!

Comment left by: Charles Packard (packardc@hiwaay.net) Awesome shot.

Comment left by: Michael Virsinger (mikev@virtechsolutions) I really like the way the subject seems to "pop" from the background. The shot is almost 3 dimensional. Well done.

Comment left by: John A. Lind (jlind@netusa1.net) I am amazed that this was hand held; superb composition and very sharply focused. Olafo says it . . . color, timing, framing, everything.

Yes, love that Kodachrome! The tonal scale in his coat is incredibly smooth and it may be my monitor but I can swear I see the subtle texture of the material.

Comment left by: Barry H (bhinderks@sprint.ca) Wow!!!!

Comment left by: Chip Stratton (cstrat@tulsa.com) Please tell me you had to take lots of shots to get this one! Great composition. Only thing that would make it better to my eye is if the red drum sticks (?) had been bordered completely with the black background - though the green is also an important element of this picture.

Comment left by: Jim Caldwell (jimcaldwell@iname.com) Great shot and great color! You've captured the expression on his face perfectly! I can't think of any way this picture could be improved.

Comment left by: Mike Cormier (ronaldcormier@hotmail.com) DAMN nice photo. Only thing I'd change would be a pol filter to clean up the glint off the 2 brooches. & deepen the greens. Nice to see a little K64 in this modern work-a-day world of Velvia and Provia :)

Comment left by: siddiq (siddim01@student.ucr.edu) i wonder how this would have looked shot a stop (or a fraction thereof) faster (or scanned differently) to get detail in the white bits and the silver (very nice detail in the black tho!). i'm not complaining, it's one fine shot with perfect timing!

Chip, - This was the only shot I took of this subject, during a brief bright spell. I’ve tried deleting the bokeh on the left in Photoshop. Looks OK, but the original colour does add interest to the shot.
Mike - I agree about the brooches- but I don’t have a polariser to fit the 300 mm - and if I had used one, I don’t think I would have got away with a hand - held shot.
Siddiq - I agree, the exposure is not quite right for the whites and the back of the hand. The scan has emphasised this a bit, but the original slide is not quite as exactly exposed as I would have liked.
