Submitter's name: Ian Nichols
Title: No title
Subject: Mike, trombonist with the Morningstar Small Orchestra, a disparate group of musicians living around the Eastville area of Bristol, March 13th 2001. Their leader asked me to come and take some shots of them rehearsing (& recording) in the cramped & dimly lit studio which they use.
Gear used: 35 RD. Given the venue & the nature of the occasion, it seemed the obvious choice: small, unobtrusive, quiet and doesn't shake at all. Even more so than an OM.
Lighting: A mixture of filament and fluorescent, on a low ceiling. Not good for an office environment, but it worked to my advantage here. Being quite close to a fluorescent tube gave a fairly soft light which falls off rapidly to give good modelling an isolates the subject from the background. Proximity also allowed a better exposure than the overall light levels might have suggested.
Exposure: 1/30 at F/4, IIRC
Film used: Ilford Delta 400, 2 stop push.
Technical information: Metering was done with a hand-held meter, incident reading from near the subject's face several minutes before the shot was taken.

I like this picture, even though I normally prefer fine grain pictures.

Comment left by: Barry Bean (bbbean@beancotton.com) Grain? What grain? I never would have guessed this was pushed two stops.

Very well exposed, nice composition.

Comment left by: Keith Berry (k.berry@telinco.co.uk) Reminds me of gritty 'fifties Trad Jazz pictures. A striking image that would be even more so with the spare shoulder and light chink cloned out.

Comment left by: John Pendley (jpendley@mail.tds.net) This says it all about combo playing. As a one time participanr and now only a photog who sometimes gets a chance at something like this, I admire this shot immensely. The grain *adds* to the reality and sense of occasion. The shoulder tells me that this guy is part of a band, but he is totally focused. I'm also mindless when it comes to good B&W photography. This is a terrific image; one of my favorites.

Comment left by: Chip Stratton (cstrat@tulsa.com) Excellent. There is considerable grain, especially considering this is a down-sampled image, but that is perfect for the subject matter.

Comment left by: Jim Caldwell (jimcaldwell@Iname.com) Great picture and very suitable to B&W. I'm amazed at the fine grain considering you shot this at 1600! This picture makes me want to go out and buy some B&W film and get back into my darkroom again!

Comment left by: Joel Wilcox (jowilcox@blue.weeg.uiowa.edu) Terrific isolation on face and mouthpiece. Very effective.
