Rock Star

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Mike Cormier
Title: Rock Star
Gear used: OM-101PF + Zuiko 135/3.5 + Hoya 1A filter
Diaphragm: f3.5
Shutter speed: aperture priority
Film used: Konica Centuria 800 ASA.
Technical information: I used the 101PF, as my other 2 OM bodies (a 1 and a 2) had Velvia 50 in them already & I needed a faster film... so... but at least I got the shot I wanted (it's really not that bad a back-up camera as long as you've got lots of AAA bateries). I used the 135/3.5 over the 2.8 because I find its a bit clearer in low light situations... (can anyone tell me why? It doesn't make sense...) Subject was about 10 to 15 meters away. Negative was scanned using a Nikon LS-2000 colour neg scanner.
Subject information: Lead singer/rhythm guitarist for a Canadian band by the name of 54-40. Shot on a press pass from the paper I work for. This particular shot was a second (it wasn't used). Therefore, I can offer it to TOPE without fear of legal retribution from the band, or my employer. Hope you all like the color contrast.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) Nice to see some concert work here; original interpretation to the portrait topic :)
I like the colours and expression in this shot; nice work!

Comment left by: annonymous (-none-) Before anyone asks, yes, there was a manual adapter 2 on the body... although with MF zuiko lenses you can use aperture priority by setting the aperture ring without the adapter.

Comment left by: Winsor Crosby (wincros@bigfoot.com) This is really nicely done. The saturation, the sharpness and solidity all create a tension with the the intimacy and closeness. One of those pictures you want to go back to and look at again.

Comment left by: Barry Bean (bbbean@beancotton.com) Like the hair lights - colors work very well. Nice.

Comment left by: siddiq (no e-mail specified) looks like a young dave barry :) btw, very nice exposure, i shot a few live performances but no shot as good as this!

Comment left by: John O'Regan (joreg@waitrose.com) Red 'glow' on the hair is v good, pose is v good, exposure spot-on. maybe there should be an audio clip ;^)
I would like it better as a portrait with the big red light on the left cropped out, but as a concert shot it provides context.

Comment left by: Michael Virsinger (mikev@virtechsolutions.com) This shot really draws me in. I like the "painted" look of the saturated colors. Nice.

Comment left by: Mike Cormier (ronaldcormier@hotmail.com) To respond to some comments:
I think the song they were singing at the time was a tune called "Ocena Pearl" & I think there may be an audio clip on their website (www.5440.com) under the album heading "Smilin' Buddha Cabaret".
I was lucky at getting the contrast and saturation, because it was entirely dependent upon waiting until the concert lighting engineers did something I liked with the stage lights.
The shot was hand-held.
Thanks for the comments.
