You lookin’ at me?

Submitter's name: John Sabine
Title: You lookin’ at me?
Gear used: OM-4Ti + 50/1.8
Diaphragm: F1.8
Shutter speed: Auto
Around 1/60th I think
Film used: Ilford PanF Plus
A roll that’s been kicking around in my bag for years and was well past the use-by date.
Technical information: The original shows head and torso.
I prefer it in many ways, but the shed behind has a hinge that is just too distracting. Cropped to get rid of that, and gamma adjusted to try and lift the eyes a bit.
Subject information: A grabbed shot of my girlfriend’s nephew. I love his expression, but the print shows a couple of tiny catchlights which haven’t scanned well and add quite a lot of life. I’m not happy with the background either.
I wish he’d been a little further away from the shed. Time to persuade him into a proper portrait session maybe...

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) Funny expression!
I don't see anything wrong with the cropping/composition; I don't know the original, but I think it works fine the way it is.

Comment left by: Barry Bean (bbbean@beancotton.com) What Olaf said - I don't see any problems here at all. It'd be nice if it was a little sharper, but I suspect that's teh scan and not the negative.

Comment left by: andrew fildes (afildes@netlink.com.au) It would be easy to dismiss it this as not sharp but - it is a great capture of a child's personality (I'll bet his mum loves it!) and it has an consistent softness which is quite pleasant. The crop is fine. The more I look at it, the more satisfying I find it.
