My Girl

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Mickey Trageser
Title: My Girl
Gear used: OM-4 + Soligor f/8 500mm mirror
Diaphragm: f/8 fixed
Shutter speed: 1/500 +/- on auto with spot meter
Film used: Kodak Supra 800 ASA.
Technical information: I really liked the way the background was thrown into an impressionistic slurry. It's not a smooth bokeh, but it resembles a painting to me. -especially the bare tree branches.
Subject information: We were behind the Palace at Versailles on 21 March. My sweetie (with IS-20 in tow) had just finished shooting the gardens on the west side when I caught her returning with a breeze from the back.

Comment left by: Barry Bean (bbbean@beancotton.com) Gotta love those cat lenses - really draws you to the subject.

Comment left by: Barry H (bhinderks@sprint.ca) Painterly indeed! Neat shot.

Comment left by: C.H.Ling (chling@glink.net.hk) Background looks interesting, it shown the "power" of 500mm reflex, but the subject to background isolation is no enough.

Comment left by: John Pendley (jpendley@mail.tds.net) Smashing. A long-distance portrait that draws attention unerringly to the subject. I like the out-of-focus, half-round shape directly behind her: it frames her head perfectly. I like the sunglasses: they add to the impromptu feeling. The trees are indeed remarkable and beautiful. The more I look, the more she stand in relief against all that great bokeh. A really fine shot.

Comment left by: Charles Packard (packardc@hiwaay.net) My first thought was "she's standing in front of a mural".
The shallow depth of field and the slight vignette around the edges really draws the eye to the subject.

Comment left by: Chip Stratton (cstrat@tulsa.com) That cat bokeh gives the tree a bit of a spooky quality. Might have been less threatening if you were closer and the background less definable.

Comment left by: Jim Caldwell (jimcaldwell@iname.com) Until I joined the Olympus list - I had no idea what bokeh was - but this is an outstanding example of what a mirrored lens can do! You might consider cropping out the wall so only that amazing background is behind your subject!

Comment left by: Jodi Jakeway (jjakeway@iserv.net) I have to get one of these lenses ! Love the effect on the background trees. Nice shooting!
