The camera becomes the subject.

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Tom Scales
Title: The camera becomes the subject.
Gear used: OM-4T + 90 f/2 Macro + Sunpack ring flash.
Diaphragm: f8
Shutter speed: Unknown
Film used: Fuji Super HG 400.
Technical information: I shot a roll fairly quickly, just for fun, in case I didn't get out and shoot more in the timeframe of TOPE 6. I ended up shooting a lot of flower shots later, but since my daughters were submitting flowers, I went back to these. This shot was with an OM-4T (now owned by another list member) and my trusty 90 f/2 macro. I used the Sunpak ring flash (DX8R, I think) in TTL mode and handheld all the shots. I was surprised that most of them came out pretty well. This smaller, compressed version doesn't do the original justice.
Subject information: I liked the results of this shot. It's amazing how sharp the 90/2 is, even just hand-holding it. I thought the subject was pretty appropriate to an Olympus themed TOPE entry. By the time this gets published, I will probably have sold the OM-2 that is the subject. Some of the others turned out nicely too. I'll add them to my webpage one of these days.

Comment left by: Jay Maynard (jmaynard@conmicro.cx) You pinched my idea! :-) Seriously, nice picture, and approaching the camera from a more or less flat perspective helps with the depth-of-field complaints I got with my Leica IIIc picture. (See ADITL 3, the 50mm one.)

Comment left by: Mike Cormier (ronaldcormier@hotmail.com) I REALLY like the subject. :)
I also like your use of a ring flash to flatten the shadows. Impressive work from your daughters as well. If only we all had teachers as competant.

Comment left by: Bruce Hamm (bhamm@magma.ca) This picture would be at home in an OM brochure. Excellent idea, and well executed. Really nice work.

Comment left by: John A. Lind (jlind@netusa1.net) Almost thought this was a B/W until I saw the red arrow. That, the timer lever in the corner and the body turned at an angle really make this photograph. Detail level is amazing, even in a scan. Very nicely done.

If you eBay the OM-2, this is decidedly the lead-in photo for the ad!

Comment left by: Chris Barker (imagopus@threeshoes.co.uk) Wise move to do something different. Nice composition. I wish that I had not done flowers as well ...
