Tatsu

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Mike Cormier
Title: Tatsu
Gear used: OM-1 + Zuiko 50/3.5 macro + QA310 flash + Bounce Grip 1 + remote sensor + 2X teleconverter + Hoya 1B filter + tripod + cable release.
Diaphragm: f22
Shutter speed: 1/60
Film used: Fuji Superia 200 ASA.
Technical information: I used the teleconverter to get that extra wee bit of magnification. The bounce grip was required for the added recharge time, as the iguana doesn't like to sit still for long :) The QA310 was held about 1 meter above and in front of the subject, while the sensor was in the hot shoe 1. The 1B filter "warmed" the subject ever so slightly, as I find Superia to be a cool, contrasty film. Negative was scanned using a Nikon LS-2000 colour neg scanner.
Subject information: My pet Iguana, Tatsu (Japanese for "little dragon" I'm told...). To give you some perspective, in this picture, she's only about 8 or 9 months old, and her ear (the opaque circular looking area behind and below her eye... some call it a tympanic membrane) is smaller in diameter than the eraser on a wooden pencil. She's not the most considerate subject I've ever worked with. :)

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) On the cover of a recent WWF magazine I received a remarkably similar picture was shown. A fine shot with lovely detail in the skin texture.

Comment left by: siddiq (no e-mail specified) how did you photograph her? was she inside a terrarium or something or outside?

Comment left by: Scott Gomez (scott@petroglyph.crestline.ca.us) Really great shot. My hat's off to you for getting such a sharp picture from a subject that was, I'm sure, uncooperative. Nice colors, too!

Comment left by: Hank Hogan (hogant@mindspring.com) Incredible ! That could be the cover shot on a magazine!
I'm so happy that you have explained how you made this picture with negative film. The intense colors against that snappy black background really draws me into the picture, too !

Comment left by: annonymous (no e-mail specified) Tatsu was sitting on a small pillow by the window where she usually sits to get sun, but it was overcast this time... so there was no sunlight in the photo. She usually sits pretty still in the sun, but all that changes when an Olympus camera is edged in about an inch or two from her face :) Would you get edgy? *smile*

Comment left by: Bruce Hamm (bhamm@magma.ca) I agree that this could easily grace a cover of a magazine. Really, really nice work.

Comment left by: Matt BenDaniel (matt@starmatt.com) I would've preferred the background to be at least partially illuminated, but otherwise this is a brilliant shot, and I agree worthy of a magazine cover.

Comment left by: John A. Lind (jlind@netusa1.net) Appears very sharp with a good lighting direction to show detail of the skin texture. The low key background makes her stand out nicely. Well done, especially given the willing cooperation you got from her for this.

Comment left by: Chris Barker (imagopus@threeshoes.co.uk) Nicely composed and well focussed... I mean well timed I suppose ;-).

Comment left by: andrew fildes (afildes@netlink.com.au) Wonderfully sharp considering the use of a teleconverter.

Comment left by: Joseph Gouder, Living in Malta (joegouda@gmail) I need very urgent a QA310 flash bounce grip for olympus OM2
