Apple Blossom Time

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Scott Gomez
Title: Apple Blossom Time
Gear used: OM-4T + 135/2.8 on 25mm auto extension tube, hand held on a bright day. (I think. I didn't note all combinations tried that day).
Diaphragm: Wide open.
Shutter speed: The 4T picked it!
Film used: Kodak Royal Gold 400.
Technical information: Not much to say here. I was experimenting with various types of lens/extension tube combinations in preparation for TOPE 6. Wasn't recording lots of info about how I shot things as I was really just practicing. This picture resulted from my wanting to gain a little working distance from the apple blossoms, and so trying a non-macro lens on the auto extension tube. I was really surprised at how this particular image turned out.
Subject information: Blossoms on a new Golden Delicious apple tree we bought for planting in our yard. The tree was in a pot on our deck at the time, and is quite small, which allowed me to easily stand next to it and gain a view down on the blossom cluster.

Comment left by: siddiq (no e-mail specified) the DOF appears quite deep for a wide open mild-tele w/ extension as the 4 buds around the bloom as quite clear, even the leaves at 1 & 3 o'clock

Comment left by: John A. Lind (jlind@netusa1.net) I've shot tree blossoms from what appears to be the same perspective; looking at them from the end of a branch. Not easy if there is even the slightest breeze waving it around! When it does work, it works very well to isolate the blossom, as it did in this one. Has a look of floating in air. The DOF on the blossoms is very good and the composition pleasing with one fully open surrounded by others that have not opened yet. A centered subject is usually not recommended, but in this one which fills the frame it works. A nice level of detail on the petals in spite of their very light color. It's very easy to blow out, especially with the very low key background you have. Nice job on controlling exposure of the subject without undue influence from the background.

BTW, the 135/2.8 with the longer extension tubes is one of my favorite combinations for macros! The lens typically renders a very smooth bokeh.
