Hot Stuff

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Volkhart Baumgärtner
Title: Hot Stuff
Gear used: OM-2n, Zuiko 50 mm/f1.8 on Panagor Auto Macro Converter, T20 flash.
Diaphragm: f4
Shutter speed: Auto - between 1/30 and 1/60.
Film used: Polaroid High Definition 100, "Made in Germany" ==> probably OEM Agfa HDC.
Technical information: This was really to try out the macro converter, which was set to 1:1 for this shot, but as the chili turned red just in time to make the TOPE 6 time frame....
T20 was used on TTL to get some front light on the backlit subject (growing in a flower pot in front of my window). Scanned on Acer ScanWit 2720S; the usual tweaking (color, contrast, dust, mask unsharp) in Photoshop 5.0 LE.
Had some problems to bring out all the details in the red, I guess because it's so saturated. I probably need to practice some more with the scanner and Photoshop.
Subject information: One of my favorite cooking ingredients.

Comment left by: siddiq (no e-mail specified) nice shot! makes me want to get something hot to eat :)

Comment left by: chaya (chayas@ix.netcom.com) I love the simplicity of it. Also one of my favorite ingredients for cooking! Maybe the use of a diffuser would have helped get out some of the hot pots on the chili. I would try and crop the end of the leaf coming into the photo on the upper right. Great shot.

Comment left by: Ray Moth (ray_moth@yahoo.com) Composition and lighting make this subject interesting and I like the bokeh too. This is a very successful shot.

Comment left by: andrew fildes (afildes@netlink.com.au) Looks like the devil's tongue. There's an odd edge effect in front of the brown background toward the tip. I might have been tempted to clone out that leaf in the top right as well.

Comment left by: John A. Lind (jlind@netusa1.net) Most of it's already been said:
Very nice color contrast enhanced by the DOF with excellent bokeh. Agree that it would be better if the leaf tip in the upper right were elimiated, but it's not that bad of a distraction due to its color. Overall its composition within a horizontal frame is pleasing.
