Anonymous pink flower

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: John Palmer
Title: Anonymous pink flower
Gear used: OM2SP + 90mm f/2 macro + tripod + cable release + self-timer.
Diaphragm: f/8
Shutter speed: Auto with -1 stop compensation - probably about 1/250
Film used: Fuji Sensia II 200 ASA.
Technical information: I just guessed at the 1 stop underexposure, it seems to be about right. Minimal manipulation in Photoshop - just a tweak of "Levels" and a bit of cloning to remove a small distraction in the background.
Subject information: Small pink flower of unknown ancestry outside my front door. With the black background it looks like a studio setup shot, but it's not. The backlighting is from early morning sun and the background is a fairly pale wooden fence. It didn't look this dark through the viewfinder, but on the slide it is completely blacked-out. Guess I've got a bit to learn about the exposure latitude of slide film!

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) For me this shot hardly couldn't have been taken in a better way, excellent backlighting and the blacked out background works very well. Great one!

Comment left by: Dave Bulger (david_bulger@austintx.net) I second Olaf's opinion -- this is nice! Exposure was tight enough to hold the detail in the fuzz on the stem. Re exposure latitude on slide film, there is none! :) Great job!

Comment left by: siddiq (no e-mail specified) ...and best of all, there's NO flare present in this tight backlit shot!

Comment left by: Matt BenDaniel (matt@starmatt.com) Wonderful!

Comment left by: Author (no e-mail specified) Thanks for your comments. As for flare - I had the kosher hood on, but there was still some direct sun falling on the from element. Luckily I spotted it, and using the self timer there was plenty of time to use a piece of card as a further lens shade.

Now I've lived with it for a bit, I reckon it would be improved by having a little diffuse light reflected onto the front, just to lighten the foliage a little. Oh well, there's next year....
