Macro Fire

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Adam Bolt
Title: Macro Fire
Gear used: Olympus OM-10, Zuiko 35-70 f4 Zoom set at 70mm + 2X Brighton Converter + Arrow Close Up Filters 2+4, Tripod.
Diaphragm: f16
Shutter speed: 2 Second Exposure
Film used: Extrafilm 200 Print film (Agfa Equivalent).
Technical information: I wanted to get as close as I could to capture the ring of light from the Lighter, so I used what was at my disposal. The print then had the red spectrum reduced and the blue increased to get back to a more natural white light.
Subject information: The reason for setting up the shot was because of one picture I had taken at a Birthday Party of the cake with the candles alight. The flash did not go off but it gave me an unusual picture of the cake only lit by candle light! The hardest part was to hold my hand steady enough without burning my thumb. I like the shot though and it was worth the discomfort.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) That's a very BOLD ;) picture! :)
Seriously, a very nice picture.

Comment left by: Chris Barrett (drchrisbarrett@netscapeonline.co.uk) Great idea, and nicely carried out.

Comment left by: Scott Nelson (snelson@hcfa.gov) Great example of a zoom+closeup lens macro shot. So many people think you need super-specialized macro gear, when simply popping a close-up lens in your camera bag can produce very accaptable results.

Comment left by: andrew fildes (afildes@netlink.com.au) Excellent for a 2 second exposure. I find the match head distracting - cropping the image to a square with just thumb and flame works better for me.

Comment left by: Adam Bolt (boldbolty@iprimus.com.au) Thanks for the comments guys! The match stick was pushed into an apple to keep it up right and a thick book was placed at the bottom right of the shot so that I could rest my hand on it to keep my hand steady enough for the exposure and also so that I could place my hand in the correct position for the frame.

Comment left by: Mike Butler (butlerfamly@earthlink.net) I have to disagree with the suggestion to crop out the match. I like the comparison or contrast (pun intended) of the sources of a flame. And the Red of the match tip complements the Blue edge of the flame. I think this is just one of those images that is like a persons choice of wine... I happen to like red wine with my fish.

Comment left by: Roy Talbot (rtalbot@laborready.com) It's like the match didn't light so by golly I'm going to set it on fire with my lighter. Very well done and steady hand to boot.
