Submitter's name: Mark Dapoz
Title: Hello?
Gear used: OM-4Ti + 80/4.0 auto macro + 2X close-up lens + 65-116 auto tube + focusing stage + tripod.
Diaphragm: f11
Shutter speed: 1/125
Film used: Fuji Superia 400 ASA
Technical information: Effective magnification is approximately 1.7:1. Natural warm evening sunlight was used for lighting. Sorry for the soft scan, it's the best I can do with my flatbed scanner and the 5x7 print.
Subject information: Our trees were infested with these caterpillars this year. I'm not exactly sure what kind they are, but they sure were nice and colourful (and destructive!). This particular one was rather active, moving constantly up and down as if it wanted me to take its picture, so I did. However, I'm not exactly sure which end of the caterpillar I'm looking at. Maybe it was trying to tell me something else :-)

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) Seems to me that this is the rear end.

Comment left by: Scott Gomez (scott@petroglyph.crestline.ca.us) It looks gigantic this way! Live in the NE USA? That wouldn't be a gypsy moth or a tent caterpillar would it?

Comment left by: andrew fildes (afildes@netlink.com.au) Definitely the rump - probably waved in a threat gesture. Down here, you might have ended up with something sticky and corrosive on your front element! Nicely surreal - good body bokeh.

Comment left by: Jim Caldwell (jamesfc@gte.net) In the thumbnail pic, this resembled a face - but in the larger picture, I think it may be the other end...! You captured it well considering it was waving around!

Comment left by: John A. Lind (jlind@netusa1.net) I was going to write that the great sucking sound you hear is this thing devouring all the flower photos, but I think the others are right; you got the hairy hind end trying to ward you away! You've been mooned by a caterpillar. Excellent critical focus with this thing waving around at you in a very shallow DOF. Great composition overall. In spite of your comments about a soft scan, it shows a very good level of detail. I have visions of what this must have looked like in the viewfinder!
