Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Steve Goss
Title: Guess
Gear used: OM-2N, 50mm f1.4 (on the camera), reversing ring, 28mm f3.5, Sylvania Sun Gun movie light, Sunpak 433 flash, Stitz tripod.
Aperture / shutter speed: The 50mm was at f1.4, and the 28 was kept at f16 with a rubber band. Shutter speed was 1/60.
Film used: Fuji Superia 400
Technical information: The subject was placed on a chair, and the camera and lens setup were attached to a tripod placed a few inches away. This whole bunch was covered with a clear shower liner. The surface of the liner is textured, which made it a large diffusion filter. The Sun Gun and flash were aimed at the subject from the outside.
Subject information: I don't know what this is, or what it is for. Perhaps someone can identify it and explain its use?

Comment left by: siddiq (no e-mail specified) if it were a little shorter/smaller, i'd guess the locking pallet in the escapement of a mechanical watch. as it is, i'm not sure of the reproduction ratio, so i can't guess the size.

Comment left by: Hank Hogan (hogant@mindspring.com) Wow this is a super macro shot! I've always liked technical photography! I haven't a clue but it looks
like something very small and mechanical. Thanks for
explaining how you did the lighting.

Comment left by: Chris Barrett (drchrisbarrett@netscapeonline.co.uk) Beats Me! Nice shot, you've solved the problem of lighting a difficult subject.

Comment left by: Anonymous Visitor Nice detail - right down to the small particles scattered about.

Not a clue what it is - :)

A great shot.

Comment left by: Mickey Trageser (no e-mail specified) Looks like a capstan on a cassette player, but that wouldn't mate up to a metal paddle, but rather a rubber roller. Do I at least have the scale right?

Comment left by: Hans van Veluwen (hcvanveluwen@chello.nl) I just held a 28/2.8 reversed on a 50/1.8 and got a field of view of 1.5cm, so the magnification must have been 2.5x. Knowing its size I still don't have any clue. The weapons of The Norious Spacemen? ;)

Comment left by: Bruce Hamm (bhamm@magma.ca) OK, this is starting to drive me nuts. For the life of me I can't figure out what this is. Is it a piece of a camera or camera equipment? Great shot and fantastic idea. This is fun!

Comment left by: John A. Lind (jlind@netusa1.net) I have little idea what it might be, but if I had to hazard a guess, it looks like an electrical part or device of some type. Would have to examine it completely in person.

Interesting composition and excellent detail. A unique lighting method that worked well for this.

Comment left by: The photographer (anonymous) Part of me is surprised that no one has figured it out yet. Another part isn't surprised, because I don't know what it is, either.

Some hints:
1. It's about 1/2 inch (10 millimeters) long.
2. It's genuine Olympus OM.

Comment left by: Steve Goss (steveg3@flash.net) Congratulations to Hans van Veluwen, who correctly guessed that it is found on the inside of an OM-3 or 4, right beside the take up spool.

Thanks also to John Hermanson, who explained that it is a switch for the automatic rewind capability of the Motor Drive 2.
