Bee on Flower

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's Name: Gregg Iverson
Title: Bee on Flower
Gear Used: OM 4T + 50/1.8 (made in Japan) + 25mm + 14mm + 7mm OM auto extension tubes + Slik tripod (used as hand support).
Film Used: Fuji Sensia II 100 ISO.
Diaphragm: F 8
Shutter Speed: auto (~ 1/250)
Subject Information: I wanted to try using the 1.8 because of the many favorable comments about the lens. I couldn't use the camera on a tripod as the bees moved too quickly, so I used the tripod as a support for my hand which supported the lens. The only manipulation was to resize the digital image and apply unsharp mask. The scanned photo does not appear as sharp as the slide. The field near my house was filled with these flowers. I had been watching them for several weeks. The day after I shot these, the field was mowed and the grass was baled.

This has a very tricky composition, and stalking an insect head-on is never easy.
I like the colours too, they look wicked, almost psychedelic, even :)

Comment left by: Daan Kalmeijer (daan@kalmeijer.net) Nice picture. Spectacular colours. Looks like end-of-the-day light to me.

I think this bee is in fact a syrphid fly (hover fly or flower fly)

Comment left by: chaya (chayas@ix.netcom.com) Great shot, I love the deepness of the purple. What time of day was it? Also love the soft focus of the macro..

Comment left by: photographer (no e-mail specified) The time was early afternoon under a mostly cloudy sky. It was taken near the shade of a woods but the flowers are this color.

Comment left by: Jose (jose@esquare.com.au) Hello there,

I think this shot is great. The flower, probably small and usually taken for granted, was captured really nicely. Well done. Just a question; why did you apply unsharp mask in Photoshop? Was the shot slightly blurry on the edges because you took the shot by hand?

Cheers,

Jose
