Leaving the nest

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Eric Pederson
Title: Leaving the nest
Gear used: OM-4Ti + 90/2 + 14mm auto extension tube + T32 flash on hotshoe + wide angle diffuser.
Diaphragm: f16
Shutter speed: 60 (Auto +1 exposure)
Film used: Kodakcolor Gold 100 ASA.
Technical information: Camera was handheld. Scale was about 1:1.5 to the negative. About 1/2 of the frame has been cropped out of this image. This was a one-shot photo opportunity: You can see the results of using the flash on these terrified babies in this shot taken a few seconds later.
Subject information: A tight cluster of newborns, about a day old and ready to leave the nest. Mom was nowhere to be found, so I have no idea what species of spider this was. Background is pearly finish plastic, which I loved for its texture and flash reflectance. The egg sack was suspended about 1 cm above this plastic.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) Finally some spiders in this gallery that do not look like monsters from hell ;)
Seriously: a really nice picture, and I like the "hovering effect" of the nest too.

Comment left by: Ian Nichols (no e-mail specified) Might not look like monsters from hell, but the absent Mom was probably breakfast...

Comment left by: Andrew Gullen (no e-mail specified) Nice shot - I think they're argiopes (aurantia?).
