Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Andrew Fildes
Title: Spider
Gear used: OM-1 + 50/3.5 Macro handheld.
Diaphragm: f5.6
Shutter speed: To suit - probably 125/250
Film used: Fuji Reala
Technical information: Polaroid Sprintscan 4000 + VueScan, no correction.
Subject information: First outing with the beat-up 50/3.5. Limited choices for floral subjects (it's not Spring down here - Northern Hemisphere imperialism strikes again!) I like the bokeh but the highlight on the bud tip blew out.

Comment left by: siddiq (no e-mail specified) pretty smooth bokeh! might want to try upping the contrast a bit, or the levels since it looks a tad flat on my eyes.

Comment left by: Mike Cormier (ronaldcormier@hotmail.com) This is great for the product of a lens you claim is "beat up". The glass must be fine, I'm sure. Personally, my 50/3.5 is one of my favorites. Pretty good bokeh as well for a lens that many claim has 'bad bokeh'. Also very crisp for hand-held. Colors look slightly washed out, though. Is this a product of the scan?

Comment left by: Joel Wilcox (jowilcox@blue.weeg.uiowa.edu) I like the composition.

Comment left by: Bruce Hamm (bhamm@magma.ca) Nice bokeh and composition. I really like the composition. Very interesting textures. You can almost feel this picture.

Comment left by: John A. Lind (jlind@netusa1.net) Excellent bokeh, DOF and the composition with the vertical part of the plant off-center is visually pleasing. Good placement of the spider at about a rule of thirds point; helps it stand out a little more. You've already mentioned the highlight at the tip. While I might pursue more contrast and boldness of color, this can also work as it is with more a pastel feeling. It won't stand out among other images or leap off the wall though, and that's OK too.

The background color works nicely with the subject plant; makes it seem like it "belongs" there.
