Darren and Renee's wedding

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Dan Mitchell
Title: Darren and Renee's wedding
Gear used: OM-2S + Vivitar 17mm lens
Diaphragm: f16
Shutter speed: About 20 seconds, if I remember correctly.
Film used: Generic Fuji 100.
Technical information: Nothing surprising, I put the camera on a table, pressed the shutter, and waited for the second click.
Subject information: Darren and Renee's wedding; I brought along a body and some lenses more to experiment than to take 'serious' photos, because they already had arranged a photographer to cover that. In particular, I didn't bring a flash, because that would have made my already overstuffed pockets just that bit too full. This left me relying on long exposures to get any sort of shot -- but in this case it turned out nicely, I like the almost ghostly impression that the couple give, moving fast enough to fade but not so fast as to vanish.

This picture could easily have been titled something like "the ghosts' wedding" or so, as the nearly empty dance floor, with just the ghost like two dancers (the bride and her father/groom ?) kind of stirs up that feeling. A lovely shot.

Comment left by: siddiq (no e-mail specified) very sweet...about the only suggestion i have is to remove the chair left edge of frame, otherwise i really like the long exposure effect

Comment left by: Charles Packard (packardc@hiwaay.net) Neat photo. The star bursts in the background; camera flashes? or were you using a star filter?
Did you notice the shadows of two heads on the right wall? Might they be Darin and Renee?

Comment left by: Bruce Hamm (bhamm@magma.ca) Very nice. I'd suggest a tighter crop so that the dancing ghosts are a bit more prominent, however that may lose some of the atmosphere. I really do like this. Congrats for an excellent TOPE entry.

Comment left by: Dan Mitchell (no e-mail specified) Re: cropping -- I tried this, but it seemed to lose some impact; I think the solidity of the chairs in the foreground helps reinforce the transparentness of the couple to some extent -- without them there, they don't have as much 'context' somehow.

No filter (other than a generic skylight), the stars in the background are other people's flashes going off. Not sure who the shadows are -- I'd not even noticed them before, I'll admit.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) Regarding the star shape highlights: this is caused by stopping down to f16. Furthermore, apparently the 17mm Vivitar lens has 6 diaphragm blades :)
