Surfing Burleigh Point

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Adam Bolt
Title: Surfing Burleigh Point
Gear used: OM-10 with Tamron 80-210 f3.8 zoom plus Brighton 2x converter.
Aperture: f4
Shutter speed: 1/500 sec
Film used: Agfa Vista 100
Subject information: My original idea was to capture some shots at the country rodeo.
Unfortunately we arrived too late (just on dusk) and I did not have the right film or equipment to set up for any shots I had in mind because of this low light. So I took off to the beach the next morning to take some sunrise shots. I was also hopeful that I would capture some surfers in action. I was not disappointed with both the sunrise and surfing action (see here for the sunrise I saw that morning).
Technical information: I used the 80-210mm with the 2x converter for two reasons
1) Because of the distance the surfers were from me and
2) Because I was keen to try and get a group shot of a few surfers on the one wave (hence the zoom).

I didn't get any good group shots but I was very happy with the silhouette shot of this surfer. I think this shot typifies the culture of the Gold Coast and our golden beaches.

Other work: Also ran shots.

I like easthetically (SP?) pleasing shots, and this picture is just that! Also, it conveys the feeling that the surfer got up before dawn to dedicate as much time as possible to catching good waves.

Comment left by: Mickey Trageser (no e-mail specified) It looks as if the surfer is taken by the view beyond. Pausing to enjoy it. I think I'd have pushed the surfer further right to acknowledge his perspective in the scene. Perfect exposure. I like it!

Comment left by: John Pendley (jpendley@alltel.net) At the risk of seeming pretentious, this picture is a metaphor to me. The man, whose figure is darkened and static, faces the elements which are full of light and powerful energy. He will fall some, and he will ride some of the waves all the way in. I'm always more interested in what a picture is *about* than I am in the technical details. This one draws me because it is about something.

Comment left by: siddiq (no e-mail specified) hmm, yes, as mickey said, i'd have positioned him further right, and not included the top tiny bit of sky. that just catches my eye, i'd much rather have this end with the water only at the top of the frame. otherwise, well captured. i supposed you were too far out to for fillflash, but that's a nitpick in an otherwise nice shot. john, if you like metaphoric pics, then you will like my entry (or the runner-ups), pending scans :)

Comment left by: Charles Packard (packardc@hiwaay.net) Yep. Nice exposure especially for shooting into the sun. Technically I agree with Siddiq about the sky. Without it there would be a greater sense of infinity. I disagree about moving the surfer, unless you could have used fill flash. I think the moving the surfer would have made the scence too bright and thrown the image off balance.
