Submitter: James Olson
Title: Portland Ballet
Camera: OM-4
Lens: 50/1.2 w/ orange filter
Film: Ilford XP-2 Super
Shutter Speed: around 1/15
F/Stop: around f/4
Technical information: I shot 4 - 5 quick frames, and I was trying to "de-focus" , or move the focus ring during the 1/8 or 1/15 shutter speed... You can't really see on this image, but a few of the others have an interesting "softness" to them.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) In this case, a "soft shot" might indeed also have worked well, I wonder about those results too. Then again, I'm always a sucker for ultimate sharpness, so I, for one, think this picture also works fine as-is.

Comment left by: Mickey Trageser (mickeytr@yahoo.com) You really locked into the right exposure even with the bright overhead backlighting. I'd like to see the 'defocus' effect. Please tell me you were using a tripod. I don't do too badly at 1/15 handheld, but sheesh, while turning the focus ring?

Comment left by: Jamie Costello (jamie-nancy@juno.com) This is a really nice shot. Ordinarily, the backlit roof panel would sit on this photo like an 800 lb. gorilla, but because it's in black/white it works nicely. The stark contrast allows those pole supports to echo the dancers' poses. I don't think this would have worked nearly as well in color. Nice shot.

Comment left by: andrew fildes (afildes@netlink.com.au) Nice composition - looks like he's about to launch her into the stalls! The 50/1.2 is tough enough but slow speed defocussing? - a scarey prospect. I's want something like a focus clamp handle (a la Hasselblad) to attempt that.
