Submitter's name: Steve Goss
Title: Lesbia's 40th birthday party, September 14
Gear used: OM2N, either a Zuiko 50mm f1.4, or a Vivitar 24mm f2.8, Probably the 50
Diaphragm / shutter speed: unknown / auto
Film used: Fuji Superia 400
Technical information: The dancers were illuminated by various strobes and flashing colored lights that the DJ brought. Looks like the strobe went off twice before the 2N saw enough light.
Subject information: This is Oscar & Lesbia, with someone I don't know in between.
Our church held a prayer meeting Wednesday night after the World Trade Center was attacked, and I wanted to get a picture of it for this TOPE. However, getting decent pictures from our dark sanctuary with no flash and no tripod proved impossible.
That left Lesbia's party. Oscar had turned 40 a year or two ago, and they had a party at this same hotel. So now it was Lesbia's turn.
The party was going well, we had eaten and some people were dancing, when the music shut down and we were all ushered out of the hotel. It seems that there was a modeling talent search happening in one of the other rooms, and one of the girls who was not chosen went home and called in a bomb threat. So, the police came and searched for a bomb that wasn't there. We were in the parking lot cooling our heels, when all of a sudden, someone started screaming, and a lot of people started running away from the front of the hotel. Finally, when the screamer made it all the way out to where we were, one of us asked what had happened, and she said that she just wanted to run and scream and see what would happen.
Eventually, we were let back into the hotel, the DJ started up again, and the party took up where it left off. At this point I went out and got my camera. This was the best of the bunch in an artistic sense, some others with flash were sharper, but with washed out foregrounds.

Comment left by: Jamie Costello (jamie-nancy@juno.com) This photo conveys "society". The composition is great with the line from Lesbia's face running to Oscar's. The motion, the vitality, I think you got it all. In light of what you had to go through to get it, the photo speaks volumes about "society".

Comment left by: Jim Caldwell (jamesfc@gte.net) I really like this - it has a rather tipsy, party sense to it. Very nice!

Comment left by: Chris Barker (imagopus@threeshoes.co.uk) Like it ... and the story is almost as good as the shot :>)

Comment left by: andrew fildes (afildes@netlink.com.au) Whenever i try this sort of thing, I fail. Great movement and colour. Shame you didn't get a shot of the crowd dealing with the screamer or the police arresting the bomb hoaxer or.....
