The Jazzman

Comments made by the photographer

Submitter's name: Pawel Golik
Title: The Jazzman
Gear used: OM-4 + Zuiko 50mm f1.8 handheld
Diaphragm: f1.8
Shutter speed: 1/60
Film used: Fujichrome Velvia
Technical information: Late evening, available light. I had to shoot wide-open to hand-hold with Velvia. The photo is slightly underexposed anyway. On the actual slide the shadow detail is better - lost in scanning. Anyone has a SprintScan 4000 to donate? ;-)
Subject information: Street jazz trumpet player in New Orleans. Shot on a Friday evening in the French Quarter. In this normally busy area he seemed strangely alone, as if playing for himself.

Comment left by: Olaf Greve (no e-mail specified) You said it: it would be nice to see a bit more detail in the face, but otherwise this is a very nice shot with lovely bokeh, just the right amount of DOF and nice leading lines.

Comment left by: Tris Schuler (tristanjohn@mindspring.com) I don't work with chromes much but even with their narrow dynamic range I'd think some detail should be available in the shadow of the face. I'd simply expose that area of the picture another 20% or so. Even a hint of detail, say subdued highlights, would make for a stronger image. Good picture anyway, though. Love those street horns!

Comment left by: Bill Barber (nsurit@aol.com) Nice photograph of this street musician. One of the things I've been working on with my people pictures is making sure there is a reason for my amputations. I would like to have either seen his feet or really not seen then from cropping much closer and maybe using a horizonal format rather than the vertical.

Comment left by: Jim Caldwell (jamesfc@gte.net) Wow, handheld with Velvia in low light! Try adding a little soft fill flash - I would like to see you in just a bit closer, but this is a real nice photo!

Comment left by: andrew fildes (afildes@netlink.com.au) Yup, I'm with Bill - if you've lost the feet, take 'em off at the knees! The trumpet dominates, projecting from the darkness and into the street - it's his connexion with the world. Consequently, I don't mind losing the face in the shadows.

Comment left by: loïc (lokilo@club-internet) Did you use the spot measurement on the trumpetist. If not that's maybe a reason of the under exposure. I use it when the the background is more luminescent than the subject, for good results.
